My take on Topps Diamond Giveaway

I loved the Topps Million Card Giveaway in 2010. It was a great promotion and I had the added bonus of redeeming a code that returned a 2000 Topps HD Derek Jeter autographed card. When I saw the initial promos for the 2011 Diamond Giveaway I knew that I would be participating. Who wouldn’t want a card with a diamond in it?

Well, to date I’ve entered 75 codes. I purchased 50 code cards on eBay and I got the other 25 by opening a lot of 2011 Topps retail packs from Wal-Mart and Target. I literally have nothing to show for the codes in terms of redeemed cards. I’ve not received one card good enough to make me want to have the cards shipped to me. That being said, Topps added the “extra chance” Diamond Dig game this year. The game is simple, you dig a hole in the dirt on baseball diamond grid and reveal either an instant win or a virtual diamond ring. The rings can be redeemed for prizes as you accumulate more and more rings.

My goal in the Diamond Dig was not the actual diamond ring that you receive once you hit 60 different rings. My goal was to get the 2011 Diamond Anniversary complete set that you get once you have 45 different rings. I’m happy to say that I have completed that goal. Does anyone know if this set is any different from a standard Topps factory set? I can’t seem to find any information on it.

I don’t know whether or not I should keep going to try and get to 60 different rings. I heard that the elusive ring is Mickey Mantle. I don’t know if you’re guaranteed to find the Mantle if you dig every hole on the grid or not. Please leave a comment if you know the answer to that one.

I think I’ll continue to redeem codes simply because you have a chance to unlock a diamond card. I’m insanely jealous every time I see someone post one on the various forums. I wouldn’t even care if I got the diamond checklist card. I just want one!

I unlocked a Billy Williams 1968 card for my son the other day. cool card, can be valuable depending upon condition. There are some good ones in there for sure. Last year we got the 1960 Chicago White Sox team card which I thought was pretty neat

I have completed one full board and halfway thru my second with no Mantle, I learned some very disturbing news yesterday that the ring isnt even Diamond, I feel like Ive been misled I have received some cool prizes but have sunk way too much money into this the whole time thinking a diamond ring was my goal. I could’ve went to Jared and bought a 5 carat diamond with the money spent. Good luck to all I am done trying.
