Topps Redemption Mail Day!

Just a quick follow-up to my 2014 Topps Platinum Football Retail Value Pack Case Break post from about 2 weeks ago. If you read that post, you’ll know that we pulled several redemption cards from the case. I entered them the day after we busted the case and they’ve already arrived today. Not bad service from Topps there.

So the cards are a Veteran Auto Patch of Ryan Mathews numbered 100/172, a Rookie Refractor Auto of Devin Street, a Rookie Patch Auto of Aaron Donald and a Rookie Patch Auto of Jeremy Hill. Donald and Hill are both promising players, so I was happy to see that those had been signed and would be available for shipping. I was even more happy when I opened the bubble mailer today and saw the patches on those two. 3-color on Donald and the Nike swoosh on the Hill. Topps hooked me up on the patches.

I can’t remember having a retail case break this good in a long time. I was happy enough hitting that Odell Beckham gold auto and the other cards detailed in the previous post, but getting these today made it that much better.

8-box 2011 Topps Value Box Break

January 12, 2012 Leave a comment

I’m sure no one wants to hear about another hit from a Topps Value Box at this point, but I’m going to show you one anyway. It’s not nearly as awesome as the Matt Moore or Eric Hosmer 2011 Bowman Chrome Superfractor Autographs pulled recently. It’s not even nearly as awesome as the Brett Lawrie 2011 Bowman Chrome Orange Refractor Autograph I pulled a couple months ago. However, it is another Orange Refractor.

Not pictured below are fifteen Topps Diamond Giveaway code cards, seven #BCE1 Bryce Harper Red and one #BCE1 Bryce Harper Silver. Pictured are a Koufax Cognac SP, Dimaggio Diamond Anniversary SP, Adam Wainwright Hope Diamond, Ricky Romero Diamond Anniversay All-Star Jersey /60 and a Keyvius Sampson Autographed Orange Refractor /25.

Like I said, the Sampson certainly isn’t a major hit like many of the others posted, but it’s still a very rare autographed parallel of a promising young prospect.

I’ve Obtained My Holy Grail of Baseball Cards

January 11, 2012 7 comments

I still haven’t posted my collecting priorities for 2012, but if I had, the following card would have been #1 on the list. My holy grail of baseball cards is the 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente rookie card and I now own one. Sure, it’s only a PSA 1, but that doesn’t bother me at all. The card is complete and the colors are great. Most importantly, there aren’t any stains anywhere on the card.

My dad was raised just outside out of Pittsburgh, PA and grew up a Pirates fan. He raised me to be a Pirates fan and told me stories of the teams of his childhood. More often than not, the stories focused on the 1960 team. Their improbable victory over the New York Yankees in the 1960 World Series is something that any baseball fan from that era would remember, not just Pirates fans. When my dad wasn’t talking about that team, he was telling me about Roberto Clemente. A man that I had never seen play quickly became my favorite player and a mythical character that I only knew through baseball cards.

I had a chance as a kid in the 80’s to purchase this card from a local card shop for $100. I was going to buy it for my dad (and me) as a birthday present. The most I had ever spent on a single card at that point was $10 on a 1986 Donruss Jose Canseco rookie. When my dad caught wind of my plan, he quickly put an end to it. $100 was far too much to pay for any baseball card.

I’m not sure why it took me so long to purchase this card. I’ve surely spent more for other single cards than I spent for this one. I think I jut had it in my mind that this card was somehow unattainable. If anyone out there has a “holy grail” that’s affordable, I would urge you to purchase it. I cannot tell you how cool it is to finally own this card.

Topps extending Diamond Giveaway deadline. But…

December 3, 2011 1 comment

Canada Card World (@CanadaCardWorld) tweeted this earlier today. I haven’t seen it anywhere else, but have been out of the loop a bit yesterday and today.

Topps has announced that they’re extending the end of the Diamond Giveaway (www.diamondtopps.com) from January 1, 2012 to June 30, 2012. All codes from 2011 Topps Baseball Series 1 and 2011 Topps Update will expire on 1/31/12 as printed on cards, while codes from 2011 Topps Baseball Series 2 can be redeemed through 6/30/2012. All trading and card ordering will remain open until the site shuts down. If you wish to have your cards shipped to you, you must do so before the site closes at 11:59PM EST on June 30, 2012.

Does this mean that Topps has a glut of Series 2 on hand and wants to sell more of it? I know that it was a poor performer. Not cool that they’re not extending the deadline for all three series.

2011 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects Blaster Case Break

December 2, 2011 Leave a comment

I picked up a 16-box blaster case of 2011 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects for a good price last week. The retail version is much more appealing this year because of the retail exclusive autographs and futures game jersey cards. The purple refractors are also nice. These blasters deliver a lot of value for the dollar.

Each blaster contains a base chrome refractor, a prospect chrome refractor, a purple base chrome refractor and a purple prospect chrome refractor. There’s also a thick gold parallel set similar to the base gold parallel set in 2011 Bowman. I wish they hadn’t included these because all of the cards have edge or corner damage. The one upside to having them in each pack is to make pack searching tougher, so I applaud Topps for that.

If you’re in the market for a blaster or three or three of these, Target has a $10 of $50 coupon that’s good through tomorrow, December 2nd. Print Coupon

The cards pictured below are all the hits pulled from the case, pretty impressive for a blaster case. The Wimmers gold autograph is /50. The Thornburg futures relic is /25. The Herrera and Fuentes relics are out of /199. All other autographs and relics and unnumbered. In addition to what’s pictured, I pulled some nice base prospect refractors and base purple prospect refractors. Some names included were Trevor Bauer, Blake Swihart and Matt Barnes.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today is my favorite holiday of the year. It’s filled with family, great food and NFL on TV all day long. What more could you want? I hope that everyone who reads this blog has a great day!

BLACK FRIDAY is tomorrow. There will be some great deals available online from several dealers. Here are all the sales that I know of listed below.

Blowout Cards Their sales starts at 6:00AM EST. They always have great prices, but you have to be very quick. Their site gets crushed on Black Friday.

Dave & Adam’s Their sale starts at midnight. From my experience, D&A gets less traffic on Black Friday and their sale prices are available longer than on Blowout. Not sure if it’s that they take longer to sell out or if they have more quantity available. Probably a mix of both.

Atlanta Sports Cards Their sale starts at 6AM EST. I have no experience with their Black Friday sale, but I know their prices are some of the best on the web throughout the year.

Topps Company Topps will be selling baseball factory sets Buy 1 Get 1 Free. They will also have one special per day plus 20-30% off everything on their site. Granted, everything is retail, but there should still be some worthwhile deals.

Basecall Card Exchange 10% off a single item $50 or more plus free shipping.

2011 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects Checklist Released

November 15, 2011 Leave a comment

Probably old news for most of you, but I figured I would post this anyway. Topps tweeted today that the checklist had been released on their website. I didn’t even know that they had checklists on their site, so that was a nice surprise. I usually use BaseballCardPedia.com when I need to see a checklist, though.

Here is the direct link to the checklist. It’s in .pdf format, so it requires Adobe Reader.
