8-box 2011 Topps Value Box Break

January 12, 2012 Leave a comment

I’m sure no one wants to hear about another hit from a Topps Value Box at this point, but I’m going to show you one anyway. It’s not nearly as awesome as the Matt Moore or Eric Hosmer 2011 Bowman Chrome Superfractor Autographs pulled recently. It’s not even nearly as awesome as the Brett Lawrie 2011 Bowman Chrome Orange Refractor Autograph I pulled a couple months ago. However, it is another Orange Refractor.

Not pictured below are fifteen Topps Diamond Giveaway code cards, seven #BCE1 Bryce Harper Red and one #BCE1 Bryce Harper Silver. Pictured are a Koufax Cognac SP, Dimaggio Diamond Anniversary SP, Adam Wainwright Hope Diamond, Ricky Romero Diamond Anniversay All-Star Jersey /60 and a Keyvius Sampson Autographed Orange Refractor /25.

Like I said, the Sampson certainly isn’t a major hit like many of the others posted, but it’s still a very rare autographed parallel of a promising young prospect.

2011 Bowman Chrome Eric Hosmer Autographed Superfractor Has Been Pulled

January 11, 2012 Leave a comment

In case you haven’t heard, the 2011 Bowman Chrome Eric Hosmer autographed superfractor was pulled from a Topps retail value box. You probably recall that the Matt Moore autographed superfractor was pulled from a value box a few weeks ago. Granted, the Bowman Chrome packs inside in the value boxes are hobby packs, but this is really defying the odds.

Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing big pulls come from retail products. Many collectors don’t have a hobby shop in their area and only have mail order as an option. It’s nice to see bigger hits coming from retail for that reason alone. People think this will take business away from hobby shops, but I sincerely doubt that. The reason that people shy away from most hobby shops is bad customer service and high prices. Period.

You can check out all the talk about it on the Blowout Forums. The card is a redemption.

My 10 Favorite Card Purchases of 2011: Number 9

Card #9 on my list is a 2011 Bowman Chrome Matt Moore Prospect Autograph graded BGS 9.5. I’ve got a couple of these and would love to have more. I actually pulled one from a pack too, but it wasn’t in good enough shape to send off to BGS. This card has 9.5 subgrades across the board and a 10 for the autograph grade.

Moore was the #2 prospect in Baseball America’s Rays Top 10 prospects list in 2011. He holds the top spot in 2012. He burst onto the scene late last season when the Rays made him a September call-up. He only pitched 9.1 innings in the regular season, but had 15 strikeouts and a respectable 2.89 ERA. He went 10 innings in the playoffs with 8 strikeouts and an absurd 0.90 ERA.

Moore will certainly make the Rays out of spring training this year. I cannot think of many better investments in the baseball card market right now, certainly not from a pitching standpoint. Look for big things out of him in 2012.

2011 Bowman Chrome Matt Moore Autographed Superfractor Has Been Pulled

The 2011 Bowman Chrome Matt Moore Autographed Superfractor has been pulled. Guess where it came from? If you’re to believe the person that made the YouTube video below, it came from a retail value box. The Bowman Chrome pack in the retail value boxes is a hobby pack, so I personally don’t have any doubts that the story is true. After all, I pulled a Brett Lawrie Orange Refractor Autograph out of those very boxes over a little over a month ago. This goes to show that it can pay off buying retail.

Go to the 3:50 mark on the video to see the card. To be clear, this is not my card and I do not know the person that made the video.

2011 Topps Value Box Case Break

As you may have read in one of my recent posts, I’ve opened quite a few of the 2011 Topps retail value boxes. These are the ones that come with 5 retail packs of Topps Update, 1 hobby pack of Bowman Chrome, 1 Diamond Giveaway code card and a special Bryce Harper red, silver or gold Bowman Chrome #BCE1 refractor. I’d had pretty good success with these buying them from retail, so I bought a couple cases on eBay.

I opened the first case the other day it didn’t yield much, not even a gold Harper refractor. However, even opening a bad case still yields some nice stuff. You still get 16 Harper refractors and 25-30 code cards.

I was working from home this morning and decided to let my girlfriend open the second case while I worked. I was monitoring progress as she went and some decent stuff was coming out. The first few things I’ll highlight are from the Bowman Chrome hobby packs.

[Pictured Below] Ike Davis, Franklin Gutierrez and Julio Teheran base refractors. Conner Crumbliss prospect refractor /500. Jacob Turner purple prospect refractor /799. #BCE1 Bryce Harper gold refractor. The other Harper’s yielded 5 silver and 10 red.

Now for the hits from the Topps Update packs…

It was one of the last boxes that supplied the second most valuable card I’ve pulled from a pack. Well, my girlfriend pulled it, but you get the point. I was on a conference call concentrating on the conversation and she hands me a redemption card. I wasn’t 100% focused on what was happening and just sort of glanced at it. I remember telling her a week ago when we were opening a couple boxes of Bowman Chrome that a redemption card would be good because it would probably be Brett Lawrie. Sure enough, this redemption was for Brett Lawrie. I didn’t completely read the redemption at first because I was on the call and was honestly pretty distracted by excitement over pulling a Lawrie. The picture below says it all. Unreal!

2011 Bowman Chrome Baseball 2-box break

November 2, 2011 Leave a comment

Wow. It’s been a really long time since I’ve posted to this blog. Sorry for the absence. I hope to get back at this and update much more frequently.

The reason I felt compelled to blog today was because of my 2-box break of 2011 Bowman Chrome Baseball. I went to my LCS, Showtime Sports Cards, in Tempe, AZ this afternoon because I needed supplies. My mission was to get 660 ct. boxes and 5,000 ct. monster boxes. I succeeded in that mission, but also made my way out of the shop with the boxes of Bowman Chrome.

The only Bowman Chrome I’ve opened to date has been from the retail Value Boxes that Topps put out a couple weeks ago. They come with 5 retail packs of Topps Update, 1 hobby pack of Bowman Chrome, 1 Diamond Giveaway code card and a special Bryce Harper red, silver or gold card. I’ve opened about 20 of those and have had some luck. I pulled a Matt Moore base autograph along with a couple other lower tier base autographs. I’ve pulled two gold Harper’s as well. The retail Topps Update packs have even yielded an autograph, a few jersey cards and a couple hope diamond parallels.

Anyway, as you’ll see below, I’m very happy with my 2-box break. Not pictured are a blue refractor of Johnny Cueto, a base prospect refractor of Chris Carpenter, 10 base refractors (most notable was Albert Pujols), the standard allotment of Throwback, Bowman Future and Bowman’s Best and a couple Brett Lawrie base prospects.
