2014 Topps Platinum Football Retail Value Pack Case Break
I saw these cases at a good price through an online retailer and figured I’d give one a shot. I’ve found that the Platinum products in baseball and football always deliver hits at a higher rate in retail than most other retail products. Also, add to the equation that these value packs all come with a 3-card rookie orange flame refractor pack. That’s some good added value when you consider the strong 2014 NFL rookie class.
I always enjoy when people post breaks of retail products because you really never know what to expect. I’m especially grateful when people post the retail odds, so I’ve included a picture of those too.
The case comes with 108 total packs. Each pack has three 4-card retail packs and one 3-card orange flame rookie refractor pack. I believe original retail price was $9.99 per pack. Each pack contains 3 veteran cards and 1 rookie card.
2014 Topps Platinum is a 150-card set. The first 100 cards are veterans and the last 50 cards are rookies. The rookie cards come in a wide variety of refractor parallels. Those same parallels carry over to the autographed versions. The veteran base only have one parallel which is the thicker stock sapphire.
There are only two insert sets to chase and one is a case hit, so I don’t really consider that a true insert since completing a set of those is unobtainable for the average collector. The obtainable of the two are the Platinum die-cut rookies which fall 1:24 packs. The previously mentioned unobtainable inserts are the die-cut ribbon cards: pink BCA (Breast Cancer Awareness) and camo STS (Salute to Service). Those fall 1:300 packs in retail and are a case hit in hobby.
To give a full picture of the odds in retail, here is a picture of the back of the pack with all the odds:
Any retail product that has 1:37 odds for autographed rookies is one that I’m likely to spend money on. Especially once it hits close-out pricing levels.
Without further adieu, here is a breakdown of how the hits fell in this break. As I said earlier in this post, I’ve found that Platinum retail typically over-delivers. You’ll see below that this experience held true. Keep in mind there were a total of 324 individual retail packs in the case when comparing to the odds.
- 324 Rookie Orange Flame Refractor (guaranteed 3 per value pack)
- 78 Rookie X-Fractor (1:4 packs)
- 13 Rookie Black Refractor (1:24 packs)
- 1 Rookie Pulsar Refractor (1:465 packs)
- 1 Rookie Gold Refractor (1:920 packs)
- 15 Platinum Die-Cut Rookies (1:24 packs)
- 2 Die-Cut Ribbon STS cards (1:300 packs)
- 5 Autograph Rookie Refractor (1:37 packs)
- 2 Autograph Rookie Black Refractor (1:285 packs)
- 3 Autograph Rookie Blue Refractor (1:391 packs)
- 1 Autograph Rookie Gold Refractor (1: 2,375 packs)
- 2 Autograph Rookie Refractor Patch (1:318 packs)
- 1 Autograph Veteran Refractor Patch (1: 7,325 packs)
I’m obviously very happy with the amount of hits I received and more so the amount of longer odds parallel hits that were delivered. In terms of complete sets, the collation wasn’t great, so a cursory look through the cards tells me I’ll probably have 2 complete 150-card sets and 4 complete 50-card orange flame rookie refractor sets. Some trading or buying of needed singles could increase that number by two in each instance. I was also only 4 cards short of a 50-card rookie x-fractor set.
Now to the actual pictures of the hits which is the whole point of this thing, right?
Drumroll… check out that Beckham! Literally unbelievable that this popped out of a retail pack with only 15 made. This is the best card I’ve pulled from any type of pack in quite some time. The odds for a gold refractor auto are 1:2,375 packs. Amazingly, that was only the second rarest card in terms of odds that was hit in the case. The Ryan Mathews Autograph Veteran Patch Auto was 1:7,325 odds, but nowhere near as valuable as the Beckham. The Mathews literally sells for around $5.00, which is sad for something with odds that long.
Overall, I’m obviously thrilled with this break. The Beckham was totally unexpected. I would have been excited with just a base refractor auto of him. I honestly would have been pretty happy with this break without the Beckham. It is a retail case after all and it had already over-delivered without the Beckham. 2014 football products are very cheap right now considering the glut of rookie talent in this class. These cases yield tons of rookies considering the 300+ you get just from the orange flame refractor packs. There will be money to be made come fall.
