My 10 Favorite Card Purchases of 2011: Number 7

Card #7 on the list, which I have two of, is a 2009 Upper Deck Signature Stars Trevor Bauer USA Star Prospects Autograph. These cards are an incredibly tough pull at supposedly one per case. I say supposedly because I’ve opened three cases of 2009 UD Signature Stars and only pulled one of these cards (Bryce Brentz). Bauer will have more valuable cards, but for a standard issue, I don’t think you’ll find one more rare.

Going into the 2011 college baseball season, Gerrit Cole was all the talk at UCLA. As the season progressed, Trevor Bauer was outshining his teammate. He dominated the competition going 13-2 with a 1.25 ERA in 16 starts. Included in those 16 starts were 9 complete games. Bauer signed early, so he made 7 starts between high A Visalia and AA Mobile going 1-2 with a 5.96 ERA. There’s a realistic chance for him to join the Diamondbacks rotation in 2012.

Bauer has become well known for his unorthodox pitching motion and training regimen. Sports Illustrated wrote a good feature about him shortly after the draft. Comparisons to Tim Lincecum are naturally made. Hopefully Bauer can live up to those once he gets his chance in the bigs.
